Keepin' it real fake, part CIII: half Nokia, half HTC, all ripoff Open link in new window
submitted 217 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
As if the N73 wasn't already up for the "most knocked off cellphone of the century" award, here we have yet another rip that wasn't even so kind as to stick solely to the Nokia motif. Rather, the ZTC 8898 threw in a dash of HTC to flavor things up, and apparently, this unit can even handle its fair share of NES (SNES?) emulation. Specs wise, we're lookin' at a 2.5-inch external display (and a 2.8-

Toshiba's Portege G910 / G920 go FCC: followup to the G900 superphone Open link in new window
submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
Probably because it's not that big of a player in the domestic cellphone space, Toshiba may not be familiar with all the ins and outs of FCC confidentiality agreements, as evidenced by its testing subcontractor leaving tons of juicy photos of the unannounced Portege G910 / G920 smartphones in those devices' recently-declassified applications. Tosh's blunder clues us in to a whole world of info abo

Keepin' it real fake, part CII: Chinese iPhone knockoff thinks different (with infomercial) Open link in new window
submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
Consider the iPhone knockoff market's bar officially raised. No longer is it enough to swipe designs and iconography, now you must master the fine art of infomercials to hock your wares. This iClone thinks different with maps, photos, a motion sensor (which apparently causes its users to keep shaking the thing like a maraca), orientation sensor, Bluetooth music playback (but apparently not stereo?

More details on the Palm Treo 800w uncovered? Open link in new window
submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
According to some dedicated -- and, might we add, thorough -- Palm fans, it looks like we've gotten a few more bits of data about the (rumored) forthcoming Treo 800w. If you believe the data, FCC documents detailing emails between Palm and the agency reveal the code names and corresponding FCC IDs of four phones... including one we've never heard of with "co-locating WiFi and radio." Hear that? Th

Palm Treo 755p goes live (at last) on Verizon, costs more Open link in new window
submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
Here's a special present to those Palm diehards out there that've been sticking with their Verizon service for the past months, hoping against hope that Palm will notice them hanging out over on the largest CDMA network in the States: the Verizon Treo 755p costs $400 with a two year contract, a full $150 more than you'll pay over on Sprint. The $400 price is after a $50 mail-in rebate, but if you

Steering wheel-mounted Bluetooth handsfree kit hits the FCC Open link in new window
submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
We're not certain that your steering wheel is the best or safest place to attach a handsfree device, but those of you looking to up your Michael Knight factor might be interested in Seecode's new Wheel Bluetooth kit. Featuring a small screen and call-control buttons, the battery-operated unit allows you to chat away on speakerphone, send / end calls, and view your phonebook -- all while (hopefully

SiRF toots its own horn, readies location-enabling features for Android Open link in new window
submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
It's not like we weren't already aware of SiRF's participation in the Open Handset Alliance, but nevertheless, the company is sounding pretty ecstatic about the software developer kit it "just received." Reportedly, the outfit is already hard at work on "end-to-end location-enabling features" for Android, and in case you couldn't guess, it's also providing Android platform support for a plethora o

More on the Portege G920 and Toshiba's 2008 roadmap Open link in new window
submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
Evidence of Toshiba's new Portege G920 QWERTY doesn't get any better than an FCC filing. Still if you need more, you're looking at the G920 held aloft in the wilds of some Tosh briefing. That slide on the left looks to be tattling on Toshiba's 2008 roadmap too -- at least Toshiba's lineup for launch in Russia where this presentation was apparently delivered. From it, we see the G920 scheduled for

submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
Are you ready for some football? How about full-length, live coverage of 24 NCAA bowl games. Sounds good, right? Just forget about big screen HDTV though, this is MediaFLO on your itty bitty cellphone display. Fanatics (in every sense of the word) will have access to games provided by ESPN Mobile TV, CBS Mobile and FOX Mobile through Verizon's V CAST Mobile TV. Unfortunately, none of the BCS Champ

New earpiece design puts a microphone inside your head Open link in new window
submitted 218 days ago by Engadget (via engadget.com)
Finally, you no longer have to mess with annoying bone conducting headsets to get your message heard in noisy environments. A Japanese company called NS-ELEX has created a new type of earpiece / microphone called the "e-Mimi-kun" (good ear boy), which utilizes air vibrations in the ear to deliver your voice to the other end of the line. Apparently, the design reduces outside noise by a factor of s
