4 out of 5 stars Small, simple, cheapish, but there are better   March 18, 2010
Frank L. Settipani (Pueblo, CO)
I bought this on lightningdeals 4 mos ago and have used it much. Keep it charging on my computer all the time and grab it when I leave for work. It is rock simple to use. Charges with USB mini and accepts any standard USB cable to your device. It is 1000 mAh, good for 3/4 charge on my Blackberry 8330 with large 3rd party battery.

If you want 5 times the total power in just a slightly bigger package at about twice the price, check out Satechi iCel 4400 mAh Battery Extender Pack and Charger for iPhone 3G & 3Gs, iPod, Flip & Vado HD Camcorders from Satechi, listed on Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Duracel lInstant power review   March 14, 2010

I got the Duracell Instant Power Charger (DIPC) to provide backup to my blackberry and other devices which use a USB charger. I've only had it for a two months but so far its been great. I keep the DIPC charged and in my computer bag in case I my blackberry (BB) runs out of batteries. I've had to use it twice so far and each time it worked exactly as advertised. It actually charges my BB faster than my computer does. The only issue is that there isn't enough juice in the DIPC to fully charge my BB. It only gets to 3 bars (out of 4). For the $25 or so that I paid for it its a nice thing to have when you HAVE to use your phone and it has no power left.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product - the best and the only one I know.   March 9, 2010

This is the best and only practical solution to charge your iPhone/iPod when no power outlet is available. Even in my hotel room where the power outlet was distant from my bed and I wanted to use my iPhone's alarm to wake me up I connected this device overnight, while sleeping and woke up on time, while the iPhone was 99% charged from this device alone. This comes in contrast to another device which I previously bought and it turned out that one needs the iPhone/iPod to have a bit of power so it's battery life can be extended by a bit. With a flat battery that device did not work. This one does. I tried it when my iPhone battery got flat due to extensive book reading.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best, but it's still a life-saver.   February 11, 2010

I bought two of these portable chargers, one for myself for my BlackBerry 8900 and one for a friend with an iPhone 3GS.

Both work well, but do not deliver on the promise of a whole charge for any device with which I've used them. On my BlackBerry 8900, I might get an extra 2 or 3 bars of battery life, which is certainly enough in a pinch. On the iPhone 3GS, it gave the device an extra 70%. On my iPod 4th gen., I can get about 80% charge from nothing.

This product has worked with all USB chargers that I have.

From what I have read of similar products, this one is a portion of the price for only slightly fewer results.

Also, I have found that this product works slightly better after each use. Li-Ion batteries tend to do this, and they also have about a 500 charge life-cycle, which can take about 2 years to get near that number, for most users.

Overall, this product falls a bit short, but it's certainly better than carrying around an extra battery that must be charged in-device. Especially for my BB, this is nice, as removing the battery initializes a reboot, which can take away critical time. I just plug in this charger, and my phone charges quickly, generally within 45 minutes or less. I would certainly recommend this charger, but only keeping one's expectations in check. Don't expect this to give you a full charge, but it is great for those times when you just don't have a charger.

i got this as a gift for a friend going on a trip and they loved it.
It let them keep their iPhone charged to play their little games and make calls.
I don't know if it works with a Palm pre because neither of us have one.

An unfortunate feature of the iPhone is it will decide not to charge from certain ipod charge devices with a message like "not compatible". It wasn't an issue with this.

Scosche solBAT II solar powered charger actually decently priced at $30
I’ll be damned. A solar charger with a 1500mAh capacity battery and 5-volt output from a relatively well known manufacturer priced at $30. That actually seems reasonable. The solBAT II from Scosche features a standard USB output port for charging most of your portable devices and it even comes with a little suction mount case for use in the car. So what’s the catch for $30?
