Yesterday's announcement by Ericsson and STMicroelectronics of the formation of a joint venture to combine ST's wireless chips with Ericsson's software platforms could be a blow to Texas Instruments. The JV between ST and Ericsson will likely mean that Ericsson will not be doing as much business with TI, resulting in TI losing more market share. In a further sign of consolidation in the wireless semiconductor industry Ericsson and STMicroelectronics have agreed to merge Ericsson Mobile Platforms and ST-NXP Wireless divisions respectively to create a 50/50 joint venture.
