There are lots of neat mobile VoIP services out in the market – two of my favourites are Truphone and DeFi mobile because of the way they embed themselves into a Nokia S60 handset, provide an additional phone number and just work where there’s WiFi. However one provider that I’ve been taking another look at

In my post last Thursday I commented on Rebtel’s dispute with O2 Germany over access to Rebtel numbers. Rebtel has just announced that O2 is no longer blocking these numbers. There’s no detail in the annoucement as to how this was resolved but it would seem that common sense prevailed. This is great news for

O2 Germany’s recent move to block Rebtel’s access numbers looks like yet another attempt by the big operators to preserve ‘their world’ at the expense of competition and customer choice. Other recent examples include Truphone’s interconnect issues, disabled VoIP clients on operator branded Nokia handsets and specific 07 number ranges excluded from call bundles. It rem...

A while ago I thought I should take another look at RebTel. They got $20m worth of investment, after all (see RedHerring funding announcement). I wondered how they were doing. Armed with a new mobile number and, effectively, a new identity, I signed-up the other day when I needed to talk to a few

Today the FCC announced that it will be investigating recent reports of SMS discrimination among the U.S. carriers, and whether SMS is even covered under the non-descrimination portions of the telecom act. Rebtel, which offers low-cost VOIP options to mobile phone users via SMS short code, has filed a complaint after being turned down by
