Panasonic and smaller Japanese electronics rival Sanyo are starting talks on a capital and business alliance, aiming to boost each other's strengths by working together in solar cell, battery and other areas, both sides said Friday.

Weekend reports Panasonic may acquire rival Sanyo Electric sent share prices of the Japanese electronics makers soaring on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Tuesday.
